Clonmel

Clonmel is a town of Anglo-Norman Origin nesting on the Banks of the River Suir, situated in a valley between the Comeragh Mountains and famous Slievenamon. The name Clonmel derives from the Irish word Cluain Meala meaning “Vale of Honey”.
Clonmel, the county capital of
Tipperary, is a market town. It is one of 12 Irish towns and cities that have its own Corporation & Mayor.
Clonmel is strategically situated, in the South East central to the main markets of
Waterford, Limerick and Cork . It is linked to Dublin by a good bus and road service. The major national ports and airports are within easy reach.
Clonmel is unique in that it is a microcosm of
Ireland
and Irish Society. The town and it’s hinterland, which has always been an integral part of it’s existence and development, uniquely reflects the wide spectrum of challenges facing the country as a whole, from the critical issues of sustainable rural and urban development, community development, skills migration from small part-time farming to large scale enterprise, development of a dynamic tourism industry, the growth of a significant indigenous small and medium type enterprises, the provision of critical infrastructure support systems, to the establishment of a Third Level Education Institute and also the generation of significant local investment in major renewal programmes.

Population 
The town has a population of about 17,000 within the borough itself with another 5,000 in the immediate area, and is central to a population of 1,000,000 within one hour’s drive.
Clonmel Industry 
Clonmel has a long and proud industrial heritage including, Bulmer’s - home of Bulmer’s Cider and many other market leading drinks; Merck Sharpe & Dohme, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical company; Pinewood Laboratories also in the pharmaceutical area and many other notable companies. Clonmel Healthcare, Guidant and Weyerhaeuser.
Amenities 

Clonmel's Greyhound Track, recently refurbished and re-opened. Normally, racing is held on Sundays and Thursdays at 8 pm.  

Powerstown Park Racecourse, north of the town, holds 13-14 meetings throughout the year. 

The town has several swimming pools and gyms, as well as a pitch and putt club and two nearby golf clubs:  Clonmel Golf Club in Lyreanearla (Tel.052-24050/21138) and  Slievenamon Golf Course on the Fethard Road (Tel: 052 32213)

Clonmel Public Services
Clonmel consists of, Clonmel Borough Council, South Tipperary County Council, South Eastern Health Board, Garda Siochana, Southern Regional Fisheries, Nursing Homes, Library, Shopping Centres.
