Clonmel is a town of
Anglo-Norman Origin
nesting on the Banks of the River Suir, situated in a valley between the
Comeragh
Mountains
and famous Slievenamon. The name Clonmel derives from the Irish word
Cluain
Meala
meaning “Vale of
Honey”.
Clonmel, the county capital of
Tipperary, is a market town. It is
one of 12 Irish towns and cities that have its own Corporation & Mayor.
Clonmel is strategically situated, in the South East central to the main
markets of
Waterford,
Limerick
and
Cork
. It is linked to
Dublin
by a good bus and road service. The major national ports and airports
are within easy reach.
Clonmel is unique in that it is a microcosm of
Ireland
and
Irish Society. The town and it’s hinterland, which has always been an
integral part of it’s existence and development, uniquely reflects the wide
spectrum of challenges facing the country as a whole, from the critical issues
of sustainable rural and urban development, community development, skills
migration from small part-time farming to large scale enterprise, development
of a dynamic tourism industry, the growth of a significant indigenous small
and medium type enterprises, the provision of critical infrastructure support
systems, to the establishment of a Third Level Education Institute and also
